Shanghai, China's largest city by population is one of the world's largest seaports and a major industrial, technological and commercial centre.The city offers a fascinating blend of traditional, colonial and modern architecture and culture. Shanghai's attractions include museums, historical sites and scenic gardens.
 

Shanghai lies on the Huangpu River in the Yangtze River Delta on the coast of the East China Sea.

The Bund is a stretch of walkway along the bank of the Huangpu River with impressive city views.
 

The Pudong skyline highlights the architectural achievements of modern Shanghai.

There are 52 early 20th Century Western-style buildings along the Bund that once housed banks and trading houses in the International Settlement.
 

Typical markets and shops are located in the older central part of the city in the former British and French Concessions.

New World, also known as Xintiandi, is an upscale pedestrianized area of shops and restaurants in restored stone-gate (shikumen) buildings. 
 

           

The Oriental Pearl Radio and TV Tower is the most distinctive landmark and symbol of Shanghai.

              

Nanjing Road is Shanghai's main shopping street. Everything from international fast food chains and upscale fashion stores to traditional silk and jade shops can be found.
 

Gateways mark the entrance to Gucheng and other small parks that dot the city.
 

The Yuyuan Garden, built in 1577, lies in the heart of bustling Shanghai.

The Pavilion of Listening to Billows is one of five areas in the Garden, each separated by dragon-shaped rock walls.

Extensive rockeries, gardens, ponds, gates and pavilions have been restored after damage during the Opium Wars.
 

We witnessed several examples of how traditions and modern practices are intertwined: a tourist kiosk selling traditional musical instruments, a tea ceremony being filmed, and a wedding party combining Chinese and Western elements.
 

Our School visits offered a fascinating glimpse of an educational system that was both rigorous and cooperative.
 

Typical streets such as Jujiang Road  are active with pedestrians and bicycle commuters.
